ARLINGTON -- Walter Levoy Mahan, 79 passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2013 in Arlington. Funeral: 2:00 p.m. Monday at Wade Family Funeral Home Chapel, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington. Interment: 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Lane B. Visitation: Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials: Memorial gifts may be made in his name to The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, 800 W. Magnolia Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas 76104. Walter Levoy Mahan was born to Clinton & Thelma Mahan on May 15, 1934 in Tabler Oklahoma. He lived in Cyril Oklahoma through his childhood. In 1953 he joined the United States Navy & was discharged in 1957. He traveled abroad and was on a ship most of his time in the Navy. In 1959 He met Clara Marie Pyle and they were married August 6, 1960. They lived in Cyril until 1965. They had their first child, Lisa Camilla Mahan in 1963. In 1965 he moved his family to Arlington where he was employed by General Motors. In 1973 they welcomed their son Michael Lee Mahan. He continued to work for General Motors until his retirement in 1995. After his retirement he and Clara enjoyed getting in their van & taking off to where the road led them. He found great joy in gardening & showing off his tomatoes & other fresh vegetables. He took great pride in his lawn, and enjoyed working in the yard. Levoy was a lifelong member of Meadow Lane Baptist Church & was active in the men's Sunday school class. In January 2009 he was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer & was given a poor prognosis. After 4 ½ years & 96 chemotherapy treatments, he lost his battle on October 10, 2013 He is survived by his wife Clara of 53 years, his daughter Cami & her husband Ken, son Michael & his wife Monica, seven grandchildren that he loved to aggravate & tease, brother Carl Mahan & his wife Pauline, & many nieces & nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful staff of the Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders, & especially Dr. Henry Xiong whose kindness & compassion to Walter Levoy is greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank Kathy Hogue & Gordon Saunders for their continued help & support over the last few years.
