With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Vivian Frick (Hickey), beloved wife and Momma. Vivian passed away on the night of March 19, 2025, at the age of 65. Her family was by her side.
Vivian was born in Oklahoma City, OK and is remembered for her unwavering support of her family and commitment to education. She graduated from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, OK and went on to earn two associate degrees from Haskell Indian Nations University in 1981. While raising her son (Derek) and daughter (Morin) and supporting her teacher/coach husband (Mike), Vivian dedicated her career to the El Paso Independent School district where she worked in the Human Resources department. She later moved her family to Arlington, TX and continued her commitment in education, this time supporting the Principal of Trimble Tech High School in Fort Worth, TX. She worked alongside her husband who was head baseball coach and defensive coordinator of Trimble Tech’s football team. Eventually, Vivian found herself working in the office of the Fort Worth Independent School District for the superintendent. When her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2004, she was inspired to return to Haskell once again to pursue higher education, worried she may have to support Morin and Derek on her own. Unfortunately, her instincts were spot on, and Mike lost that cancer battle in 2006. Vivian graduated with her BA in Business Administration that same year showcasing her undeniable strength. She returned to Fort Worth ISD where she worked as a grant coordinator enabling women to pursue their dreams of higher education; a fitting call to action as she was the first woman in her family to secure college success.
Vivian met her second love, Rodger, in 2010 and they were married in 2015. They enjoyed spending their retirement years together watching any and all sports (Boomer Sooner!), shooting pool, traveling, and spending their time with the kids. Vivian loved supporting Rodger’s family too, once spending a brutal Minnesota winter caring for her father-in-law, a task in which his family is tremendously grateful for and will remember for years to come. Rodger’s commitment to Vivian was undeniable and easy to see by anyone that was blessed to know them. Rodger was brilliant in caring for his wife.
Despite all her success, Vivian would argue that her greatest achievements are the accomplishments of her kids, Morin and Derek. Morin was able to pursue higher education by earning volleyball scholarships and holds a MS in Organic Chemistry from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She currently works as Principal Scientist at Eikon Therapeutics in Millbrae, CA supporting drug substance development for cancer treatments. Vivian would want you to know of Morin’s contributions to the remdesivir program at Gilead Sciences which aided the fight against the 2014 West African Ebola epidemic. Ultimately that drug was approved by the FDA in 2020 to treat COVID-19 (Veklury®). She was also part of a team at Global Blood Therapeutics/Pfizer and key contributor of Oxbryta® to treat patients with sickle cell disease. Derek was also a student athlete and captain of the golf team for Haskell where he earned his BA in Business Administration. He currently works as the first Assistant Professional and Outside Service Manager at Timarron Country Club in Southlake, TX. Vivian would want you to know that Derek was an early graduate of Arlington Lamar High School, was head man dancer at numerous powwows, and shares his dad’s passion for coaching. Some of his golf students are retired Dallas Cowboys NFL players.
Vivian was a proud member of the Osage, Seminole and Creek Nations. At times she loved touring the powwow circuits in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, California and Kansas, even far out along the east coast. All the friends she made will tell you that Vivian’s laugh is contagious and undeniably hers. Please join us in remembering Vivian every time you find yourself watching an OU or KC Chiefs football game, women’s college softball, or hear the heartbeat of a drum.
