Thomas Richard Vogt

June 27, 1945 — March 27, 2024

Thomas Richard Vogt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, passed away on March 27, 2024, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by his loving wife and son. He was born on June 27, 1945, in Dansville, New York, to the late John and Catherine Werth Vogt.

On August 10, 1968, Tom married the love of his life, Barbara, whom he met during their college years in New York. Together, they raised 2 children and forged a deep and enduring bond, creating cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of their family and friends.

Tom attended Dansville High School, was VP of his senior class and graduated in 1963. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout during his high school years. He continued his studies at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, where he was an expert marksman on the university rifle team, before transferring to the University of Detroit where Tom graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1968.

Tom began his professional career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Buffalo, N.Y. District. In 1969, he was inducted into the Army as a 2nd lieutenant. During his military service, he served in the 45th Military Intelligence Company in Saigon, Vietnam. In 1981, Tom and family moved to Arlington, TX where Tom worked at the Fort Worth District until retirement in 2008. Professionally, Tom made significant contributions to numerous projects during his tenure at the Corps of Engineers, leaving an indelible mark on his colleagues and the communities he served.

Tom’s life was characterized by his unwavering passion and meticulous attention to detail. After retirement from 40 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he spent countless hours delving into genealogy. Before the wealth of information became available on-line, Tom and Barbara travelled to the Morman Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City to do family research. He shared his findings with enthusiasm and dedication. Tom’s expertise in genealogy was unmatched, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge for both his family and Barbara’s family.

In addition to his genealogical pursuits, Tom possessed a remarkable talent for woodworking. He derived great satisfaction from crafting exquisite desks and wall units, each piece a testament to his skill and creativity.

Tom and Barbara travelled extensively. Tom visited all 50 states for work/pleasure. They loved road trips while Todd and Lynn were children, visiting many national parks and continued road trips over their many years together. Tom loved to plan travel, including trips to Europe via trains, planes and automobiles. They also enjoyed river and ocean cruising.

Tom will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his devoted wife, Barbara; loving son, Todd, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Amy Hoyumpa Vogt; adoring grandchildren, Adam and Zoe; his brother, Bill Vogt, and sister-in-law, Janice; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Vogt, and brothers, Jack Vogt and Jim Vogt.
