Sybil Faye Lytle, beloved mother and cherished member of the community, passed away on November 1, 2023, at the age of 84. Born on November 7, 1938, she was the second youngest of 12 children, born to hardworking sharecroppers in Opp, Alabama.
Sybil’s early years were shaped by her time spent in Alabama and Florida. However, it was her service in the Army as a medic during the 1950s that brought her both pride and recognition. In fact, her dedication and bravery caught the attention of the Saturday Evening Post magazine, which featured her in a story about the remarkable women serving in the military.
During the 1960s, Sybil held various roles, working in an aircraft factory, a clothing factory, and a dental lab. However, the 1970s brought about significant changes in her life. She managed the wig department in a Belks store in Orlando, catering to the increasing popularity of wigs at the time. Additionally, she contributed to the Carter blood bank in Fort Worth as a skilled phlebotomist, drawing blood to save lives.
In 1974, Sybil made the journey to Texas, accompanied by her family in a U-Haul truck towing a memorable lime-green Pontiac Catalina, affectionately known as “The Green Hornet.” This move marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
During the 1980s, Sybil shone as an Arlington businesswoman, successfully owning and managing three alterations shops with a staff of twenty employees. Her talent and skill in alterations even garnered the attention of members of the Texas Rangers baseball team, who entrusted her with their garment needs.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sybil’s true joy in life came from her deep devotion to church. She poured her heart into teaching Sunday School, leading prayer groups, and actively participating in numerous women’s groups. Her faith and love for God were evident to all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Throughout her life, Sybil pursued various hobbies, including modeling, ceramics, sewing, and doll-making. However, her most cherished moments were spent in the company of her beloved grandchildren. For a decade, her pool served as a gathering place for family and friends, with laughter, games and a never-ending supply of chips and queso. She also delighted in taking them to every park in Arlington, creating cherished memories that will forever linger in their hearts.
Sybil was preceded in death by her husband Paul Henry Lytle, parents Samuel Issac Koon and Irene Stanley Koon, and a grandson Steven Bowen.
Sybil Faye Lytle will be deeply missed by her surviving relatives, especially her loving daughter Peggy Welch. Her memory will be held dear by all who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her.
Sybil is survived by her son Michael Bowen and wife Patricia, daughter Peggy Welch and husband Ed, stepson Philip Lytle and wife Jodi, and stepdaughter Pam Stuttzka. Grandchildren of Michael: Jennifer Nelson, Amanda Chapman, Elizabeth Givens, and Matthew Bowen; and grandchildren from Peggy: Angela Spears, Nolan Welch, Christina Hoover, and Alyssa Welch; and step grandchildren Brad, Samanta, Josh, Patty, Allison, and Steven. She also leaves behind twenty-one great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
