Susan Elaine Scott Barley, 78, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Susan was born on September 28, 1945, in Sherman, Texas, to Malcolm Scott and Essie French Scott.
Susan was a dedicated and accomplished financial executive, known for her sharp intellect and keen sense of humor. She graduated from The University of Texas at Arlington with an Accounting degree and became a licensed CPA; a designation that she carried during retirement. She spent most of her career at Pier 1 Imports, Inc., where she retired as their Chief Accounting Officer and Senior Vice President of Finance. She was loved and respected by her colleagues, known as a great mentor and a leader with high standards. She was featured in the book A Gift for Girls: Words of Wisdom from Successful Women by Shirley Washington.
Susan carried her thoughtful nature into every aspect of her life. She and her daughter Allison were great friends; Allison cherishes the daily conversations they shared, a testament to Susan’s loving and attentive spirit. Susan also enjoyed regular trips to Waxahachie with dear friends.
Susan’s life was marked by her resilience, intensity, and focus, always making wise and considered decisions. She had a deep love for playing bridge, with friends for fun or sometimes even competitively. A voracious reader, Susan enjoyed expanding her knowledge and exploring new ideas through a wide range of topics including theology, philosophy, history, and biographies. A kind and gentle soul, Susan found great joy in listening to classical music and was a devoted patron of the Dallas Symphony.
She was an active, dedicated, and engaged member and lay leader at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, serving in many leadership roles on lay committees. Susan’s faith was profoundly important to her, and she was a model of transformative discipleship.
Susan’s sense of humor was both sharp and endearing, bringing light and laughter to those around her. Susan Elaine Scott Barley will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and the profound impact she had on her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
Survivors: Daughter, Allison Barley and son-in-law, David Alvarado, plus numerous beloved cousins and their extended families.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington. Celebration of Life: 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, 800 W 5th St, Fort Worth.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the General Fund at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth.
