Shyrlee Meldyne Wertz Stanley, 91, passed to eternal life peacefully on February 5, 2023 at home in Fort Worth, Texas surrounded by her children.
Shyrlee was born in Sioux City Iowa on January 7, 1932 to Irma and Milton Wertz, their third child who joined brothers Loren and Burton. She spent most of her childhood in Sioux City Iowa and summering at her parent’s cabin at Lake Kabekona, Minnesota. Her love of the water and summering in Minnesota at the cabins continued in life and shared with family and friends as her own family grew.
After graduating from high school, she attended Mills College in Oakland, California. During a Drake College summer session, she met the love of her life and married Marvin R. Stanley June 23, 1951 exactly one year after their first date. They shared over 50 years of marriage. Due to Marv’s job and his promotions, they moved a lot between Sioux City, San Antonio, California, Ohio, Arlington, and New Jersey. She always handled these moves with grace, positivity, and the excitement of a new adventure. Dear friends were kept and continued to be part of her life wherever she moved. She was still in contact with the Sub Debs, girls she met in grade school who continued to correspond with and share time together throughout the years even traveling to Geneva Switzerland for a visit.
Shyrlee and Marv retired in Granbury, Texas in the mid 1980’s at a lakefront house on Lake Granbury. She continued living on Lake Granbury until March 2019 when she moved to Watermark at Broadway Cityview in south Fort Worth, Texas.
Shyrlee’s greatest joy was her family and spending time and gathering with them whether at her house or anywhere. She loved each child individually and strove to be part of each child’s activities. This continued with her grandchild Taylor attending soccer, football and basketball games from Coppell to Des Moines to Georgia for playoffs. She dearly loved her brothers, cousins, nephews, and nieces and often traveled to family reunions in California. Soon after Marv’s passing, her brother and sister-in-law celebrated their 50th anniversary and Shyrlee and Kim traveled to surprise them. Family was the most important part of her life and many cousins are recounting the letters and notes of love and support Shyrlee sent them.
She truly believed that giving back and volunteer work were important. She served on boards and president of a few. Later when they retired, she was active in her church, Christian Science Society Granbury Church, the Melody Bells, Ada Carey Home of Women and Children, Mission Granbury, Granbury Quilting Guild and Trinity Valley Quilting Guild.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marv in 2007 and son Kyle in 2011.
She is survived by her children, Kim Stanley, Kent Stanley, Kelly Stanley Goebel, Kathryn Baxter and her husband Tim; her grandchild Taylor Goebel; her great grandchildren, Ryan Baxter, Anastasia and Michael Goebel; and sister-in-law Elsa Wertz. Also nieces and nephews Lori Wertz and her husband Richard Bischoff, Bryon Wertz, Clayton Wertz and his wife Kris, Raquel Wertz and her husband Andy Williamson and their son Burton, Greg Wertz and his wife Kit and their twin children Cole and Keely Wertz, Jennifer Stewart, and Marla Stewart and her husband Wayne Svoboda.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation the Ada Carey Shelter for Women and Children (click here to donate) or the Christian Science Society Granbury Church (click here for information).
Shyrlee lived a very full life and leaves us with happy memories, life lessons and so much love.
We will all miss her!
