Sherry Key
August 20, 1926 - November 4, 2017
H. Virginia “Sherry” Key, 91, completed her journey on this earth very peacefully at home surrounded by her family and began her new heavenly journey on Saturday, November 4, 2017. Sherry was born August 20, 1926 in Denver, Colorado to Albert and Annie Jo (Shipp) Sherick. She graduated from South High School in Denver. In the spring of 1943, a fairy tale romance began that would lead to 73 1/2 years of marriage. The story began when Sydney, a fellow from the small town of Kirkland, Texas, was riding through Denver on a troop train with other Army/Air Corps cadets and spotted this beautiful girl sitting on a streetcar waiting for the train to pass. He fell in love with her at first sight. Weeks later, he saw her by chance again at a store in downtown Denver and the rest is history. Sherry married the love of her life on April 16, 1944 and became the wife of a military officer, living in Texas, Nebraska, Missouri, Alaska, California, and Fontainebleau, France. They finally settled in Arlington, Texas where she resided until her death.
Rather than having a career outside the home, she chose to stay at home and take care of her husband and two daughters, for which we will be forever grateful. That is the most precious gift she could ever have given us. Besides taking care of her family, she was an excellent cook and made sure that Sydney ate the right foods when he became diabetic (and he's almost 96!), she loved to read, watch funny movies and TV programs, take care of her various pets (even those kitties that wandered into her yard without a home) and loved to drink Dr. Pepper! She was involved in many organizations at various times throughout her life, including the Junior League of Lubbock during the late 1940's/early 1950's, Girl Scouts and the Arlington High Riders 4-H Club.
She was a kind-hearted compassionate mother, friend and neighbor and was always willing to lend a hand if needed. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Sherry is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Sydney; two daughters, Vicki Key of Lubbock and Cindi Key Moore and husband Tom of Burleson; a grandson Cody Key Moore and wife Kristin of Lubbock, several nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Anna Belle and cats, Ginny and Squawker.
The family would like to thank the many caregivers, especially Patty Hildebrandt and Rose Richard, who provided such wonderful care for Sherry over the past year.
At Sherry's request, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are being handled by Wade Funeral Home in Arlington, TX. Interment will be held at such time when both Sherry and Sydney's ashes can be placed together forever at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery. For those who would like to honor Sherry's memory, the family suggests a donation to the Humane Society of North Texas, 1840 East Lancaster Ave, Fort Worth, TX 76103.
