Sheila Kathryn Mayo

d. July 25, 2021

Sheila Kathryn Berndt Mayo was born on Sept 29, 1939 to Alice and Harold Berndt in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She had three siblings, Carla, David and Jeffrey. She attended Academy of the Holy Angels where she won such awards as “best hair” and “best dancer.” After starring in her high school productions of “Little Women” and “Three to Get Ready,” she went on to attend St. Catherine's University for a semester, majoring in Musical Comedy. She found that St. Cates was not the life for her, and at 19, with 50 dollars in her pocket, moved to Honolulu with her best friend Kari. She lived there for a year, working for the Honolulu Star Bulletin, and she always had wonderful recollections of her time there. She moved back to the mainland and became a flight attendant for Braniff Airlines. In 1960 she met and fell head over heels in love with Captain Everett Mayo. They were married in Dallas on April 15, 1961 by the same priest who would later perform the final rites for JFK. These two had six children, eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many friends, a fabulous life of travel and much love. One thing that never wavered for Sheila was her deep and abiding devotion to Jesus. She moved through different incarnations of religion but was completely devoted to the One who led her. She would rise early in the morning to spend time with Jesus and commune with him throughout her day. If you were fortunate enough to be loved by Sheila, then you knew you were loved. She found so much delight in “her people,” in being together, in her garden- her flowers. She loved to sing, and after Alzheimers had robbed her of so much, she could still sing “Sisters, sisters, there were never such devoted sisters!” and “One More Ride” by Johnny Cash. She was a fabulous cook, a born caregiver and absolutely crazy about babies. Sheila is preceded in death by her parents Alice and Harold, and her son Jeffery Drew Mayo. She is survived by her husband of 60 years: Everett Mayo, her children: Timothy Mayo, Alison Strong (Tom Strong). Missy Marlar (Scott Acheson), Jenny Tucker (Mark Tucker) and Sarah Heroman (Bill Heroman), her grandchildren: Luke Marlar (Jenna Marlar), Mark Marlar (Michelle Marlar), David Marlar (London Marlar), Sarah Brown (DJ Brown), Mary Plummer (Terrance Plummer), Grace Acheson, Zachary Tucker, Drew Tucker (Darla Tucker), Jessi Tucker, Bo Heroman (Sandra Heroman), Emma Heroman, and her great grandchildren: Maddox Marlar, Phoenix Marlar, Jackson Kovacs, Journey Marlar, Odesza Marlar and Luna Brown. The family will have a private celebration of life in Sheila's honor. They would like anyone to feel free to leave a memory that they have of her. I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord. Be strong and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:13-14
