Ruth Helen Mckee

July 1, 1928 — November 12, 2023

Ruth Helen Witzig Johnson McKee, beloved by all who knew her, passed away on November 12, 2023, at the age of 95, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born on July 1, 1928, Ruth lived a life filled with adventure, joy, and an unwavering love for her family and community.

Raised in Superior, Wisconsin, Ruth attended Superior East High School, graduating with the class of 1946. Later, she pursued her passion for learning and obtained a degree in Business Management from the University of Arlington, graduating in 1978.

Ruth had an unquenchable thirst for travel that began in early life, spending childhood summers with her grandma at the family cabin in Wascott, on Red Lake. In her 20s Ruth was a civil servant in the Navy, working as a secretary for a U.S. admiral in Japan, where she met and married her first husband, Wyndall Johnson. Throughout her life she traveled to many places, always seeking new experiences. She and her late husband, Mac McKee, spent decades traveling the globe together, visiting family, and making cherished memories. The excitement in her eyes when describing the places she had visited was contagious, inspiring everyone around her to explore and embrace life to the fullest.

Ruth was known for her infectious laughter and genuine warmth. Her favorite color was yellow, and it perfectly reflected her sunny and positive outlook on life. She lived in Arlington for over 60 years and was deeply connected to the community. A dedicated member of the Arlington Women’s Club, Suburban Women’s Club, Friends & Foundation of the Arlington Public Library, and the Arlington Citizens Police Academy, Ruth was actively involved in various local organizations. She tirelessly dedicated her time and energy to these causes, always seeking ways to make her community a better place. She learned to play bridge as a young newlywed and felt a deep passion for playing throughout her life. Later, she learned to play Mahjong, which she also loved. Ruth was also a deep lover of the arts and could often be found at plays, operas, museums, and so much more.

Ruth touched the lives of many, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love, laughter, and community involvement. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her vibrant spirit and passion for life.

Ruth is preceded in death by her husbands, Wyndall Johnson and Mac McKee, her son, Scott Johnson, her daughter, Janis Mattson, as well as her father, Homer Witzig, mother, Jennie Witzig, brothers, James and Maxwell, and sisters, Bette, Evelyn, Lucille, and Natalie.

Ruth is survived by her sister, Tulie Schumacher, daughters, Laughren Skye, Kim Sartain, and Sandy Morelan, son, Edwin McKee, and many grands and great-grands who will continue to adore her and keep her legacy alive.
