Daughter of Arnel and Rochelle Smith, Ronell Smith Cunyus was born in her parents' home on March 5, 1937 in Ada, Oklahoma. Six months later her family moved to Colorado City, Texas where she would reside until she entered North Texas Univeristy in 1955. Ronell earned a degree in Medical Technology. After a few years as a medical technologist, Ronell was looking for a change of pace, so she enjoyed a brief tenure as a flight attendant for American Airlines.
In 1962, Don got up the nerve to casually introduce himself to Ronell at the donut table in the First United Methodist Singles Class in Dallas, TX. As Don quirked, “You can never underestimate where a donut may lead.” Sharing similar backgrounds, values and faith in Christ, they where an excellent match from the get-go. Eleven months later, on Nov 17, 1962, her brother and Methodist minister, Barton Smith, married them in the same church they first met.
In August of 1968, Don and Ronell gave birth to their first child and only daughter, Kelly Ann. In October of 1971, they gave birth to their second child and only son, Kevin Glenn. Don and Ronell made many great sacrifices on behalf of their two children, with Ronell staying home from work for years at a time after the birth of Kelly and Kevin. Ronell was passionately committed to her family. She returned to work through Home Interiors and Real Estate before entering a 24-year career as a Biology teacher from 1977-2001. In 1990, Ronell earned a Master's Degree in Biology at Texas Woman's University.
Ronell was a deeply devoted follower of Jesus Christ. She and Don have been members and faithful contributors of Pantego Bible Church for over 50 years, including members of the Bereans Community Group Bible Study and Home Group for nearly 30 years. She invested countless hours in personal Bible study, including nearly 15 years involvement in Bible Study Fellowship. But of all this, her greatest passion was serving beside Jesus in his intercessory prayer for others. Thousands of hours were devoted to the kingdom of God and his righteousness. Only in heaven will we know the impact her prayer life had on our very own.
After battling many significant health issues in her latter years of retirement, Ronell passed from this life to life eternal with Jesus on February 3, 2017 in the comfort of her own home. She is preceded in death by her mother and father – Arnel and Rochelle Smith. Survived in death by her husband Don Cunyus of Arlington, TX, Daughter Kelly Jarrell and her husband Jeff of Coppell, TX, son Kevin Glenn and his wife Holly of Arlington, TX, brother Bart Smith and his wife Ann of Plano, TX and three precious granddaughters: Mika, Macy and Sahara.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Memorial Service will be this Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 4:00 PM at Pantego Bible Church: off I-30 and Eastchase Blvd at 8001 Anderson Blvd, Ft. Worth, TX, 76120.
