Rod was born on August 5, 1946 in Beaumont, Texas to Olen Oran Hicks and Gloria Mae Clawson Hicks. Growing up he was surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, his parents and grandparents.
Rodney’s mother often told the story that he came home from school one day in the 7th grade and told her he had met the girl he would marry. In the 9th grade, he and Selah began dating. By June 1965 he and Selah were engaged and were married in December 1967. Rodney was serving in the US Airforce in Tachikawa Japan at the time. Once married, Selah moved to Japan and they both lived there until they returned to Texas to start a family.
Family was his pride, joy, and passion. Early on, he learned the value of close family relationships from his mother and the Clawson family. Life was filled with fishing & hunting trips, impromptu softball games, family reunions, picnics at Village Creek, family poker games lasting late into Saturday nights, and always lots of food while sharing old family tales. Rodney was especially proud of his two sons. He enjoyed their participation in sports and especially the opportunity to coach them in baseball, basketball and football.
Rod also enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, and ancestory. He built furniture for his grandchildren and bird houses and feeders for his wife. He built his first home in Beaumont. Rod, his dad, and family framed-out and built a little farm-house outside of Corsicanna where many fun family memories were made.
Rod exuded a compassionate and generous heart. He gave of his time, talents and resources continually and without reservation. He had a special sensitivity to those that were struggling in life and was always willing to help others. Rod was an active member of Lake Church in Arlington. He worshipped, went on several mission trips and served on various committees for over 43 years. Most of Rod’s best friends were those he attended Lake Church with.
