Richard Duane Dunlap

November 7, 1930 — August 5, 2024

Richard (Dick) Duane Dunlap, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and Korean War Army veteran, passed away peacefully in Arlington, Texas, on August 5, 2024, at the age of 93.

Born on November 7, 1930, Dick lived a full and blessed life. As a young soldier, he proudly served his country as a medic in a field hospital. After his military service, he transitioned to a career as a journeyman carpenter, working tirelessly for 40 years before enjoying a well-earned retirement.

Dick and his beloved wife, Dolores, shared a deep bond that grew stronger over 70 years of both joys and trials, including the loss of two daughters and a granddaughter. From the night of their first date until his last day, he only had eyes for Dolores.

Dick’s life reflected his unwavering faith and devotion to God. He attended church as long as he was able and then enjoyed watching services on television every Sunday. His daily practice of prayer and Bible reading brought him comfort and guidance.

His passions included cheering for the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Dallas Mavericks, as well as immersing himself in history books, National Geographic magazines, and John Grisham novels. He delighted in the simple joys of life, from singing off-key at birthday parties to churning homemade ice cream at family gatherings.

A strong fighter, Dick overcame esophageal cancer at 78, demonstrating remarkable resilience. Even in his later years, he remained active and independent, mowing lawns for pocket money well into his nineties.

Dick was a devoted father and a steadfast source of strength and support for his family. His kind heart and willingness to help others made him a beloved figure to all who knew him. His silly sense of humor delighted everyone around him, especially his young grandchildren.

A celebration of Richard’s beautiful life will be held at Wade Chapel on August 10, 2024, at 10:00 am. A public viewing will take place on August 9, 2024, at 5:00 pm. He will be laid to rest in Goshen, Indiana, near his parents and daughters who passed before him.

Richard Duane Dunlap will be dearly missed, and his memory will continue to comfort and inspire all whose lives he touched. He leaves behind his sisters, Carol Jean Valencourt and Donna Jo Yoder; his wife, Dolores Anne Dunlap; and five children: Melody Anne Ballenger, Richard (Rick) Allen Dunlap, Amy Beth Dunlap, Sarah Louise Broad, and Emily Diane Linville. His legacy will live on through his 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
