Raymond Albert Drake

July 17, 1933 — January 28, 2024

Raymond Albert Drake, 90, died January 28, 2024 in Arlington. He was born in Gist, Texas, on July 17, 1933 to Virginia Elizabeth Mahaffey and Chester Harold Drake. Ray graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, Port Arthur, and Baylor University, with a BA in History. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by siblings Clyde Arnold, Chester Harold, Jr. and Frances Drake.

Ray worked for Lockheed Martin as a facilities manager for 41 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Arlington, for 68 years where he served faithfully as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He loved singing in the Master’s Singers and especially enjoyed the bass line in the great hymns of the church.

One of his greatest pleasures was traveling with his wife. Following his retirement, they traveled to more than 60 countries, exploring the world and experiencing the many fascinating cultures.

Nothing made him happier than being a father to his three daughters and granddaddy to his four precious grandchildren. He loved taking them camping where he made “camp toast” and pancakes. Breakfast with Granddaddy always included lots of jelly.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen Bacon Drake; his daughters, Jan Anthony (Gary) of Temple, JoAnna Burns (Kevin) of Dallas, Jeanine Elgin (Paul) of McLean Va., and grandchildren Meredith Rajaraman (Sriram) of Apex, NC, Rachel Barton (Christopher) of College Station, Kylie Anthony of Atlanta, Ga., and Drake Elgin of Bradenton, Fla. He is also survived by great grandchildren Vani and Oaklee.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church, Arlington, on Friday, February 2, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Mission Arlington, (www.missionarlington.org).
