Raul Javier Moreno, Jr., son of Raul J. Moreno, Sr., and Elva Moreno, was born on November 13, 1966, in Laredo, Texas. He was received by the Lord’s embrace on June 23, 2022, at the age of 55. A resident of Arlington, Texas, Raul is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Yvonne Moreno; his children Martin Gerardo III, Michael (Shannon) Gerardo, and Samuel Moreno; his parents Raul and Elva Moreno, and in-laws Gonzalo and Thelma Rodriguez; his siblings Laura Moreno and David (Jackie) Moreno; his brother-in-law Charles Flores and sister-in-law Yvette (Gilberto) Reyes; his nieces and nephews Charles (Natalie) Flores Jr., Amanda Flores, Nathan Reyes, Nicole Reyes, Taylor Garza, Vanessa Flores, Madelyn Moreno, and Mason Moreno; as well as many others including his extended family, close friends, and co-workers.
Raul was raised in San Antonio, Texas, and attended St. George Episcopal School, William P. Hobby Middle School, and Tom C. Clark High School where he was a friend to all he met. After high school, Raul attended Texas A&M University, and completed a Bachelor of Environmental Design. He excelled throughout his academic career, joining the Alpha Alpha chapter of Tau Sigma Delta, an honor society in Architecture and Allied Arts. After graduation from Texas A&M, Raul received his Master of Architecture from Arizona State University, and later became a LEED Accredited Professional with a Building Design and Construction Certification. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects. Raul was a Project Manager for the U.S. General Services Administration for the Greater Southwest Region where he constructed the new Federal Courthouse in San Antonio, Texas. He also led the renovations of the Laredo J&L and the Convent Ports of Entry in Laredo, Texas, along with various projects in every part of the region.
Raul made friends throughout his travels and emersed himself within the culture of wherever he resided. Among many activities, Raul was an avid cyclist, who loved to take his bike all over the country. During his first treatment, he rode the RAGBRAI event in Iowa to raise cancer awareness and used his story to advocate for people fighting battles like his. Throughout the seven-day ride across the state, he spoke his truth and never wavered to his diagnosis. In 2019, he established the Ride of Silence in Laredo, Texas, to honor cyclists who have been injured or lost on the road. He was also a founding member of Team FED-UP, a group of federal employees who raised money for various charities through their riding. In addition, Raul loved attending musical and sporting events, faithfully cheering for the San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Cubs, Texas Aggies, Sun Devils, and the Dallas Cowboys.
Raul always said, “If I spend any time mad or sad about cancer, it’s time I’ve wasted.” He lived his life to the fullest, never letting it slow him down. He will be missed and never forgotten. A visitation and rosary will be held at Wade Moore Funeral Home in Arlington, Texas on Monday, July 18, 2022 at 6:00 PM. Also, a mass will be held in San Antonio at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Monday, August 1, 2022 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/donate or to a children’s cancer charity in memory of Raul J. Moreno, Jr.
