On Wednesday October 4, 2023, Peter John Chaney passed away peacefully at the age of 82. He was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and community member.
Peter was born in Washington DC on March 20, 1941, to a naval officer and the daughter of Polish immigrants. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1963 and was commissioned an officer in the US Air Force serving at Otis AFB in Massachusetts. He married his college sweetheart Judith Finch in 1965. In 1968, he graduated from Boston College with an MBA in Finance. After completing his military service, they moved to Dallas with their two children, Michele and John, and welcomed a third child, David, a few years later.
Peter became a CPA with Price Waterhouse and began a 49-year career as an accountant. He opened his own CPA practice in 1984 and retired from that in 2017. He didn’t have clients so much as friends. He often vacationed and celebrated family events with them. He actively gave back to the community volunteering with Junior Achievement, his church Saint Vincent de Paul and preparing free tax returns for low-income taxpayers, friends, family members and anyone he thought could use a helping hand.
Peter took advantage of everything this world had to offer. He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends to far off places to meet people and see things he never had. He easily switched from watching sports to going to the theatre. He spent time outdoors camping, fishing, hunting, and hiking with his children. He kept in shape with exercise all throughout his life including playing lacrosse at the Naval Academy. He was an avid reader going through a new book every week or two. Most of all, enjoyed being at home with his family. His joie de vivre will be greatly missed.
Peter is preceded in death by his mother Ann, father Clarence and stepmother Virginia who raised him like her own son. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judith Chaney, their three children – Michele Windsor and her husband Mark, John Chaney and his wife Angela, and David Chaney, as well as his six grandchildren – SPC(P) Paul Windsor and his wife Brittany, 2nd Lieutenant Brendan Windsor, John Windsor, Cadet James Windsor, Mia Chaney and Dylan Chaney. He is also survived by his two brothers and sister and numerous nieces and nephews.
