Nettie Oldham Gammage, 96, of Arlington, Texas went to the Savior on Wednesday afternoon, April 16. 2025. She was born Nettie Lee Oldham in the home of her grandmother on July 14, 1928 to Les and Maggie Oldham of the farming community of Cato, Trousdale County, Tennessee. She graduated salutatorian from Trousdale County High School in 1947 and went to work for the Tennessee Book Company in Nashville. Her involvement in Lockland Southern Baptist Church led to a conviction that she was being called to be a missionary nurse, and she enrolled in the diploma program at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. After completing her training, she was hired as the campus nurse at Oklahoma Baptist University, in 1955.
In 1956, Nettie went to San Francisco, California for the summer. Here she met Albert Gammage Jr., a young preacher attending Golden Gate Seminary and pastoring a church plant. They were married 3 months later, attracted by a mutual desire to work on the foreign mission field, among other things. In 1957 they were appointed by the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to serve in the Republic of Korea. Here they served for 20 years, and had 2 sons. In 1978 the Gammages transferred to the Republic of the Philippines and worked for another 17 years. The Gammages retired to Arlington, Texas in 1995.
Nettie was preceded in death by her husband, Al in 2006. She is survived by her sister, Janice Crook of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, sons, Lee and Tom, their wives, Kathy and Brenda, and four granddaughters, Michelle Mann, Christina Beall, Madeline Cavanaugh, and Melinda Gammage. Her life's desire was to know Jesus Christ, to share His love with the world, and finally, to stand before Him face to face. By His grace, all has been fulfilled.
In lieu of flowers please donate to International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention.
