Michael “Mike” Gregg Whelan, 69, passed away on April 13, 2017 in Arlington.
Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, at Moore Memorial Gardens, 1219 N. Davis Drive. Arlington. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, September 22, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington.

Mike was born on September 13, 1947 to Bernard and Ramona Whelan in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up in Kerrville, Texas where he graduated with honors from Tivy High School. He attended Abilene Christian College and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1970 with a degree in Business Administration. He married his college sweetheart, Martha, also in 1970. They then moved to the DFW Metroplex and he went to work as an underwriter for Employers Insurance of Texas. He went on to receive his CPCU, a professional insurance designation.
He later went to work for Lone Star Gas Company, Enserch Corporation, and TXU as Insurance Risk Manager. During those years, he was active in many organizations, including Spencer Foundation, Captive Insurance Companies Association, Energy Insurance Mutual, the Boy Scouts of America and the Dallas YMCA.
He also served as a Deacon at North Davis Church of Christ in Arlington, Texas. He was the Ministry Leader for the Jamaica Outreach Ministry effort.
Survivors: Mike is survived by his wife, Martha, of 46 years; daughters, Alison Pirtle, Katie Beitler; son-in-laws, Greg Pirtle and Mike Beitler; and two very special granddaughters, Morgan and Madeline Pirtle. He is also survived by his brother, Gary and wife, Betty; nephew, John and wife, Katie and their 3 children.
