Meleta was born on February 23, 1946 in Orange, Texas . She attended local elementary and high school while growing up there. Leaving her hometown, she moved to Denton, Texas to study at the University of North Texas. After graduating from UNT in 1968, she went on to teach for over 30 years at several elementary schools in the Arlington Independent School District. First, as a classroom teacher and then as an ESL teacher. She loved working with the young students and has kept in touch with many of them through the years.
During retirement, Meleta loved spending time with her husband, attending her four grandchildrens' many events; baseball, soccer, volleyball, basketball and theater. If they were in it, she was there cheering them on. She recently reconnected with several of her college friends and roommates to enjoy reminiscing about their days at UNT, during their monthly lunches. Participating with her book club friends and lunches with former teaching colleagues was always at the top of her list and would always brighten her day.
Meleta was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Burnett, and father, Johnnie Burnett, both of Orange, Texas.
Survivors include her loving and devoted husband of 48 years, Ralph Navarro; children, Mike (Kim) Navarro and Susan (John) Shryock; grandchildren, Cade and Ben Shryock and Mia and Gage Navarro; brother, Billy Burnett; aunt, Betty Cook; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
