Precious mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Maxie Allene Choukrane of Arlington, Texas passed from this life on January 20, 2021 after battling myriad health issues and complications.
Maxie was born in Van, Texas on March 11, 1937 to Cecil Herman Golmon and Eula Odell Sanders Golmon. She was a church-going, Jesus-loving person with a passion for music. After graduating from Van High School, she attended Baylor University and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music. At Baylor she met James R. Horton and they were married on August 23, 1958. They lived together in Dimmitt, Texas before she and their children relocated to Arlington, Texas.
Maxie enjoyed a career as a teacher and choir director. After leaving the teaching profession, she discovered a passion for numbers and was very proud to have worked in the finance department at Aeorspatiale Helicopter, later American Eurocopter. In April 1992, the real adventure began when she moved to Mahwah, New Jersey for work. She loved discovering the world and taking the train to New York City. She was involved in various coffee groups and ultimately the New Jersey Pro Arte Chorale group which led to a performance at Carnegie Hall. She married Henri Choukrane November 26, 1994. Their permanent residence was Stamford, Connecticut and then Asheville, North Carolina, but they shared many months each year traveling all over Europe and set up an apartment in Villefranche-de-Rouergue in southern France. When jet-setting became too difficult, they closed their residences in France and North Carolina to move back to Arlington and be close to family. She shared her love and talent as choir director and church pianist for several small churches in both Asheville and Fort Worth. She also shared herself as caregiver to many newborn babies. She loved her babies!
Maxie was an active member of First Baptist Church Arlington. She loved to travel, craft, sew, quilt, knit/crochet and spend time with family and friends.
Maxie is survived by sons, David Horton and wife Laine of Arlington, TX, Austin Horton and wife Donna of Crandall, TX, daughter Amber Dembroski and husband Kevin of Kennedale, TX, brother Gene Golmon and wife LaJoyce of Dallas, TX, sister-in law Reneatha Golmon of Woodway, TX, nieces, nephews and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren - both familial and adopted by the heart.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org) or the North Texas Food Bank (ntfb.org).
