Mary Margaret Basham

August 25, 1928 — March 8, 2021

Arlington, Texas - Mary Margaret Basham passed away peacefully Monday, March 8, 2021 of natural causes. She was born in Itasca, Texas to Emil and Mattie Witte. After graduating from Waco High School in 1945, she earned a Bachelor's degree from Baylor University. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Daniel. They were married in Waco on September 2, 1949. They relocated shortly after their marriage to Fort Worth and in 1953 settled in Arlington where they lived happily together for 64 years until his death in 2013. She was an active member of FBC Arlington since 1953 and served on numerous committees, including the last two Pulpit search committees. She was one of the founding members of the Etcetera Sunday School class in 1976. The class continues to thrive today and is a melting pot of topics, with guest speakers from all walks of life and religious beliefs. Mary Margaret accepted Christ at the age of 9. She wrote in a memoir, “For a child brought up in the church, there is no radical change when a person chooses God. I believe it is just an evolutional experience of gradual growth.” Her life was evidence that she chose God and lived her life to serve Him and learn more about Him. She taught at Arlington High School for twenty years, teaching Honors English and American History. She received a MLA from TCU in 1980. She loved to entertain and was a friend to everyone. She was quite the conversationist and chose to think outside the box. She was known to take the longer route and drive the backroads. Always interested in exploration, discovery and the unexpected. She loved music, loved to sing and loved listening to Frank Sinatra. Her favorite hymns were Love Lifted Me and How Great Thou Art. Mary Margaret will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She leaves behind her son, Nathan Basham and wife, Terri; daughter, Charis Hunt; grandson, Clayton Turner and wife, Heather, Spencer Basham and Tyler Davault and wife, Jessica; and great-grandchildren, Kinsey, Haylee, Madison, Clara, David and Olivia. She also leaves behind sister Emily Byrum and numerous nephews and nieces. The memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Arlington on March 24, 2021 at 2pm.
