Mary Lou Humphries

October 8, 1930 — November 16, 2023

Mary Lou Humphries, a beloved member of the Arlington community, passed away on November 16, 2023, at the age of 93. Mary Lou was born on September 8, 1930, in Florien, Louisiana, to Avril and Joy Miller.

Mary Lou’s life was dedicated to service and kindness. She worked as a devoted secretary at the Methodist Church in Louisiana, where she met the love of her life, Jim Humphries. They were joined in holy matrimony on April 9, 1952, celebrating a love that would endure for decades.

While Mary Lou pursued further education at a business school, her true passion lay in supporting the education system. She worked in the school tax office, Ferguson Junior High, and later at the AISD administration building in payroll. Her hard work and dedication earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Mary Lou found joy in simple pleasures. An avid reader, she could often be found delving into the pages of a good book. She had a love for sports and was known for her prowess on the basketball court during her high school years. Her creative spirit shone through her talent for ceramics and sewing.

Mary Lou’s commitment to her community was evident through her involvement in various organizations. From 1997 to 1999, she served as the President of the Arlington Women’s Club, a role that became an honorary lifetime membership. Her contributions extended beyond her presidency as she played a crucial part in designing and securing the location for their new building. Additionally, Mary Lou served as the PTA President, exemplifying her unwavering dedication to her children and their education.

With her warm and genuine personality, Mary Lou had a way of making everyone feel like family. Affectionately known as “Nana,” she always had a listening ear and an open heart. Her infectious sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to those around her, and she never missed an opportunity to support her cherished grandchildren, never failing to attend their games and performances.

Mary Lou had a special place in her heart for the color pink, and she loved traveling with Jim and her family. One memorable trip was witnessing Reagan’s Inauguration, an experience that brought her great pride. She also enjoyed attending plays at Theatre Arlington, where she could immerse herself in the wonders of the stage.

To honor Mary Lou’s memory, her family kindly requests that donations be made to the Arlington Women’s Club, a cause that was dear to her heart.

Mary Lou’s passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by her surviving family. She is survived by her son Ron Humphries, daughter Paula Threlkeld and her husband Stan, as well as her loving grandchildren Tiffany Threlkeld, Amber Bennett and her husband Jake. Her legacy will also live on through her great-grandchildren Madison Bennett and Luke Bennett.

We will dearly miss Mary Lou’s comforting presence, her heartfelt conversations on the phone, and her nurturing care for the family pets. The holiday season will never be the same without her, as we fondly remember the joy of gathering around the table together.
