Mary Jane Upton

Mary Jane Upton, 83, of Kokomo, Mississippi, passed away on April 28, 2022, in Arlington, TX.

Mary Jane Upton was born on March 17, 1939 in Columbia, MS, to Thad and Irma Toney.
Mary Jane graduated from Columbia High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. She enjoyed years of public school teaching where she was beloved by her students.

Mary Jane married Gary, aka “Danny,” a home town boy from Kokomo, toward the end of his college studies. They had 2 children, Dr. Toney Upton (wife Shannon), of Arlington, and Dan Upton (wife Melinda) of Beaumont.

Mary Jane (or “Sister” as she was often called from family and friends in Mississippi) was strong in spirit, humble in heart, and loved others deeply. Her faith in Jesus defined her life and fueled her passion for others – whether they were neighbors, store workers, rich or poor, white or of color.

Mary Jane is survived by sons Dan, wife Melinda, and Toney, wife Shannon, as well as four grandchildren Britton, Camden (wife Madison), Faith (husband Michael), and Gema.

Mary Jane is preceded in death by her husband Gary (Danny), parents Thad and Irma Toney, and sisters Billie Sue, and Peggy June.

The graveside service for Mary Jane will be Saturday, May 7, at Kokomo Methodist Church Cemetery at 10:00am.

A memorial service for Mary Jane will be held in Beaumont, Texas in June. Details for the service are still pending at this time.
