Mary Ann Fikes

May 12, 1931 — January 14, 2018

Mary Ann Fikes died at home on Sunday, January 14, 2018. Services: Mary Ann deeply loved her family and was deeply loved in return. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3, 1:00 pm at Wade Family Funeral Home, Arlington, TX., interment to follow at a later date at DFW National Cemetery. Mary Ann was born on the family farm near Waxahachie, Texas, May 12, 1931, oldest daughter of Clyde and Margaret Keenom. She attended the one room Grove Creek School in Ellis County, and graduated from Waxahachie High School in 1948. She was trained as a nurse at Waxahachie Hospital and worked there until she married William Fikes in 1952. They were married 65 years. Mary Ann was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church from 1961 until 2011 before she joined Trinity United Methodist Church. She loved her church, especially when she worked with the preschoolers and cooked for fellowships. She worked with the children, baked cookies for the HOPE after school tutoring program, and served in many areas of the United Methodist Woman's Society. In 1966, Mary Ann and Bill, with a leap of faith, accepted a new position that moved the family to Honolulu for three years. The experience rekindled a love of travel that later took the couple to Europe, South America, Australia, and throughout the South Pacific as well as many places closer to home. In their retirement years, they became active in the Arlington YMCA exercise classes and fundraising. Mary Ann was the heart of a close family. One expression of this devotion was the annual Keenom Christmas Eve celebration she hosted for the large, extended family every year from 1969 to 2015, continuing a tradition began by her mother. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Arthur, and Walter and one sister, Betty Jo Lloyd. Survivors: She is survived by her husband, William (Bill) and two sisters, Edna Snider and Margaret Lee. She and Bill had two children, Steven Fikes and Donna Vaughan. She is also survived by four grandsons, Christopher and Brian Fikes and William and Joseph Vaughan. There are also four great-grand children, Joshua, Kaitlyn, Nicholas and Gabriella Fikes.
