Marjorie “Marge” Anne Hampton entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
Marge was born to her parents, James and Marvel Bowyer, in Bellville, Kansas on May 11, 1934. She was the youngest of 3 children. Her hobbies in childhood included piano and voice, and she attended Eldorado High School.
A growing passion for child development and education led her to begin her undergraduate studies in Elementary Education at Kansas State University in 1952.
As she worked towards her degree, she met Jerry Hampton, and they began a lifetime of love and laughter together. Following her college graduation Marge and Jerry were married on February 26, 1956. Jerry was serving in the Army at this time, so they lived in many different locations including New Jersey, Texas, Alabama, & Colorado. Very soon after they were married, they had the surprise of learning their first child (Sheryl) was on the way. She was born in December. While stationed in Colorado Springs their 2nd child (Steve) was born. They moved to Wichita, Kansas following Steve’s birth as Jerry took a job at Beech Aircraft. Their 3rd child (Jim) was born in 1962, and their 4th (Lynda) came in 1964. Marge stayed quite busy with 4 young children. She would not have had it any other way. She considered them her greatest ministry always. Wherever Marge and Jerry were during their years they always found a church. They were members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Wichita and quite active in the life of the church. In 1968 an opportunity came available for Jerry to take a job at LTV in Grand Prairie, Texas. They made the move to Arlington, Texas in May of 1968.
Marge was passionate about sharing the love of our Lord with others and was a true embodiment of the words of Jesus in Matthew 19:14. “Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Called to a life of ministry, Marge served countless children and families as teacher and director at First Presbyterian Preschool for 35 years. Her role far exceeded that of teacher and director, and the relationships grown at FPPS became family, withstanding the test of time and even continuing into her final days here on earth. Outside of the preschool and after retiring, Marge always found ways to serve the Lord, leading and participating in many different Sunday school classes, Bible study and support groups. She also served as a Stephen Minister and Lay Chaplain. Often the first one to offer a prayer, a shoulder, or an encouraging word, Marge never strayed away from an opportunity to minister to and serve those in need.
Marge began her battle with Alzheimer’s years ago and fought like a champion through all the many stages. Through it all she displayed such unparalleled courage and strength. Her faith never wavered. On June 29th, the difficult decision was made to begin hospice care. Many did not think she would make it a week, BUT GOD. We had the blessing of sharing many more special moments over the next 9 months. Another “I love you,” Thanksgiving, Christmas, and 69th wedding anniversary to mention a few. What a gift from God. Through this time, we were abundantly blessed to have such an amazing group of caregivers who loved Marge like their own. We consider them an extension of our family. They will have a special place in our hearts forever.
Marge joins her parents, James and Marvel, siblings, Jim and Barbara, and precious granddaughter, Samantha, in heaven, along with many other friends and family members. She is survived by her husband, Jerry, their four children: Sheryl and husband, Jeff; Steve; Jim and wife, Lesha; Lynda and husband, Matt, Bonus Daughter from South Africa, Mary Jean Thomas, 14 grandchildren: Lyndsey and husband, Sean; Cameron and wife, Amanda; Kyle and wife, Alex; Kenna and husband, Chris; Kasey and wife, Haylee; Lauren; Malynda and husband, Payton; Nathan; Lacie and husband, Justin, bonus grandchild from South Africa, Sipho Johnson, fourteen great grandchildren, and countless more forever friends and extended family members. Marge loved her BIG family more than words can express.
The Celebration of Life for Marge will take place on April 16th at 1 pm at First Methodist Mansfield Church, 777 N. Walnut Creek Dr, Mansfield, TX. By God’s amazing grace Marge lived an incredibly full and blessed life. She will be unbelievably missed by her family and so many others. Although are hearts are hurting, we have such peace in knowing God’s plan is perfect and through her amazing life and love for the Lord her legacy will continue to be felt for generations to come.
We would like to leave you with her favorite verse.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Because in her words “it’s just that simple.”
