Dear Granddad,
When I was little, you used to read the paper every day. You would always read the obituaries and tell me that you were looking for your name, because that meant you would have a very bad day. Today is that day, but I don’t think you’re having a bad day at all. I think you’re in Heaven and enjoying being reunited with those who’ve gone before you. You reunited with your wife, Zelma “Jo,” who you were married to for 66 years, and who you missed so much these last 6 years since her passing. I bet your parents, George Clifton and Mildred Dews (nee Fine) met you at the gates, and rejoiced at getting to hug you once again. While serving in the U.S. Air Force, you traveled to England during the Korean War, and you were there for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Today, I hope you got to meet her.
Your time in the Arlington Garden Club probably prepared you to tend to God’s garden, which I suspect is the biggest and most beautiful you’ve ever seen. But I bet the biggest welcome of all came from your beloved pets that you cherished over the years: your dogs Trixie, Pepe, Benji, Lil’ Bit, and Jake, along with your cat Skylar.
You’re a Longhorn through and through, having gotten your B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from there, but I’m convinced there’s a dash of TCU Purple deep down, too. You used your degree when you worked for Rockwell International, and you helped the astronauts get to the moon and back. I know you’ll enjoy looking down at the stars, with Grandmom by your side and a white chocolate mocha that tastes even better when it’s made in Heaven. I bet you’ll sit together on a park bench with a pile of peanuts nearby, watching the birds and squirrels come down from the trees and grab them, like we used to do on camping trips. You’ll probably be playing Uno with your favorite TV stars, like John Wayne and Andy Griffith. In the fall, you’ll cheer for the Cowboys from the best seat in the house and hope the Red River Rivalry Champion is wearing burnt orange.
You didn’t leave behind “survivors.” You left behind a legacy. Your daughter, Kim Mory (nee Dews) and son-in-law, Art Mory; your granddaughter, Deanna Rust (nee Mory) and grandson-in-law, Brent Rust; and great-granddaughters, Everly and Ava Rust; as well as numerous family and friends. You will also be missed by your cats, Buffy and Misty. I think today is the best day you’ve had in a long time. I’ll miss you, but I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with the place when I get there. Love, Deanna
