Mai Vongdara

d. November 26, 2020

Mai Pratumshun Vongdara was born August 1, 1943 in Udon Thani, Thailand, one of seven children born to Somdee and Ouan Pratumshun. As an adult, Mai moved to Laos and there she met the love of her life Sampson Vongdara, a soldier in the Lao army. They were married for 43 years. The life they had changed when they were visited by a missionary couple of Jehovah's Witnesses. They began to study the bible and she was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on October 16, 1971. Baptism was the beginning of a life course that brought Mai great joy and satisfaction. She enjoyed the privilege of telling others about Jehovah's Kingdom and the Bible's hope for the future. It became increasingly difficult for them to practice their Faith in the country of Laos. Under the threat of their life, the family made the dangerous trip across the Mekong river and temporarily settled in a Refugee camp in Thailand. The family immigrated to Dallas, Texas in 1979 and eventually settled in Grand Prairie, Texas. Having come from a large family and having a large family of her own, Mai was known for having a big heart, self-sacrificing spirit, and resourcefulness. Her family would be the first to tell you that there wasn't a problem that she couldn't fix. She was a very kind, caring, and giving person. She derived the most satisfaction from helping other people, oftentimes supporting other families even when she had little means. Those close to Mai would describe her as having a sense of humor, one that was coupled with a big smile and laughter that was contagious. Her glowing spirit and warmth lit up the room and continues to touch all those who were close to her. Mai is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sampson Vongdara; her son, Klaine Vongdara; her parents, Somdee and Ouan Pratumshun; her brothers, Chanh, Thurn, Bai, and Sangwan Pratumshun; her sister, Baou Navahsee. She is survived by her sons, David Vongdara (Nina), Khonsavan Vongdara (Chinanard); daughters, Bouchanh Dohr (Richard), Saysamone Sides, Bovone Phonpraseuth, Paige Anderson (Randy), Vandi Stone (Stoney), Jenny Torry (Tawa); sister, Kai Khounthavong (Joe); eighteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
