Lonny Hughes Jones, of Arlington, Texas, passed away on December 6, 2024. Lonny was born to Anderson Hughes and Joyce Jane Jones on October 10, 1947 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Lonny was a standout track athlete and football player at Clarksdale High School. After moving to Kennett, Missouri, he was co-captain of the Kennett Indians and led the team to multiple playoff wins during his senior year as a quarterback and strong safety.
Despite being recruited to Division I schools for football, Lonny chose to focus on academics in college, earning a business degree in accounting from Delta State University. He began his accounting career as an auditor with Peat Marwick, and quickly demonstrated both work ethic and a strong facility with financial information. Lonny went on to earn his CPA and work in commercial banking in Fort Worth, Texas. He also worked closely with the Texas Department of Banking and was instrumental in leading multiple banks through insolvency during the savings and loan crisis. In 1995, he founded his own CPA firm in Arlington, TX where he served thousands of individuals and small businesses, providing tax services, mentorship, and business advice. He also served on the Board of Directors for Grandview Bank for over 30 years.
Lonny was an avid golfer, maintaining a zero handicap for many years. He was also a sportsman, and loved to hunt upland game birds, ducks, geese, elk and antelope. He demonstrated a passion for good sportsmanship throughout his adventures, sharing his hunting skills and proper outdoor conduct with his sons and hunting companions. He approached hunting like everything else in his life, with great concern for honesty, upstanding behavior, and respect for people and animals.
Lonny is survived by his sister, Diane Fisher, his wife of 55 years, Susan, and his three sons: Scott, Randy, and Trent. He took the greatest delight in his family and raised his children with a strong sense of honesty and work ethic. He will be remembered most of all as a loving husband and father, who sacrificed willingly and happily to help his family flourish.
The family will remember Lonny’s life in a small ceremony at Wade Funeral Home in Arlington, TX on January 10, 2025, at 2:00pm Central. There will be a Memorial Visitation prior to the service from 1:00pm to 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider making a donation to Volunteers of America in Lonny’s name.
