Larry Allen Flagtvedt was an Air Force Veteran in the Vietnam War, from December 31,1968- June2, 1972. He was stationed in Okinawa, and South Korea. He was a compassionate nurse, and a devoted family man, who peacefully passed away at the age of 73. He graduated from nursing school at Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Larry was a unique person, a very dedicated and caring nurse for 44 years in the OR, who loved people. Nursing was his calling, and exhilarating to him, as he showed love and compassion to his patients, and fellow co-workers. Back in high school, looking into career books with his counselor, he wasn’t able to make up his mind. So the man asked him, “what do you want people to say about you when you die?” Larry said, “I was able to help people.” And that’s what he did in his career and life. He had a gift of talking to people, calming them, and was very good at it. He had a big heart, passion for life and work, as it satisfied him. He wanted to be remembered for helping people. He was full of love, warmth, and gave support, guidance, and sometimes lectures to his family and anyone who might listen. His love for his wife was unwavering, and evident to anyone who knew him, and the love back to him was the same, with deepest respect and pleasure for one another. They shared a bond strengthened by the Lord, who guided them, especially throughout his illness. Their passions included their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, love for fishing, camping, kayaking, dogs-Maggie and Abbi, and especially working and building things in his barn. Larry was also an open book, and would love for anyone to pick a page, and he would freely tell you his story. He will be fondly remembered for a kind heart, dedication to helping people through nursing, and the love and joy he brought into the lives of others. His legacy of compassion, hard work, and devotion will hopefully continue to inspire and stay within the hearts of people who had the privilege of knowing him (as it has to many in the family already). He will be truly missed.
Larry is survived by his wife, Diane Marie, his sister Shirley (George) Kramer, his brother Sigval(Toot)(Joy) Flagtvedt, his sister Sandra (Mike) Walker, his children Heath Flagtvedt, Jace (Yoli) Brannen, Rebecca Flagtvedt, Jennifer (Mitchell) Barlow, Joshua (Kristen) Flagtvedt, and a bonus daughter Monica Yocum (whom they both grew to love as a daughter), his grandchildren Laura (Jacob) Davis, Anthony Vilano, Brenden Arellano, Jeffrey Aparicio, Luke Flagtvedt, Elyse Barlow, and Elijah Flagtvedt, and his great-grandchildren Jenni Davis, Ellie Davis, Adaline Davis, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
