Kay was born to Mary Elizabeth Corcoran and August Matthew Hickey in Stroudsburg, PA. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Marywood University and a Master of Education degree from Texas Women’s University.
Kay’s love for life and strength of character was an inspiration to those who knew her. Her faith had no limits and she shared her gifts and spirit so freely with those around her. She had a joyous soul and always had a smile on her face. Kay was keen for adventure, traveling to many countries and white water rafting into her 70s! She took every opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy nature, especially mountains, beaches and autumn leaves.
If you knew Kay well, you knew how much she loved music. She was an accomplished musician, playing piano, organ and cello. She worked in a dance band in high school, as a church organist/pianist, as well as an accompanist. We are blessed to have a record album of her performing on piano. She passed along her musical abilities to her many accomplished grandchildren.
Above all else, family was the most important part of her life. She was the kind of mother who always tried to find a way to say ‘yes’. She fiercely supported and loved her children, bestowing in them a strong moral compass and a love for learning. She was so proud of her “grandies” and left them with a lust for life and trust in the Lord.
Her life reflected her love for people as she worked in public school and religious education. She served on the Fort Worth Diocesan Pastoral Advisory Committee, the St. Maria Goretti Parish Council, and the United Way Board of Fort Worth. In her retirement she enjoyed the friendship of her Morning Joys group and worked with the Arlington Life Shelter and the Peace and Justice Ministry at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved daughter Ann Marie, and her brother Bill. She is survived by her caring and loving husband and best friend of 62 years, Ed; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Arnaud Mathieu) and her sons, David (Jenny) and James (Amy); her precious grandchildren, Sarah, Haley, Sophie, Kelly, Hannah, Claire, Marc, Jenny and Jamie; her brothers, Don (Barb), Bob (Gen) and sister-in-law Barb; and many nieces and nephews.
Kate/Kay/Mom/Grammy, be at peace with the angels.
