Joyce Janice Sturgess

September 6, 1933 — May 5, 2021

Joyce Janice Sturgess, 87, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 in Arlington, Texas. She was born on September 6, 1933 in Wichita Falls, Texas to William John and Mabel (Branham) Edwards. After her high school graduation, Joyce earned a bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance from Southern Methodist University in 1955. She married Thomas W. “Tom” Sturgess (Lt. Col. USAF/Ret.) on December 28, 1954. She was a loving wife and mother, dedicated piano teacher and longtime member of P.E.O., a women's philanthropic educational organization. During Tom's 23 years of service as a pilot in the USAF, he, Joyce and their 3 children lived in many locations throughout the United States, including several wonderful years in Hawaii. After Tom's retirement from the USAF in 1978, they settled in O'Fallon, Illinois. The family were long-time members of O'Fallon First United Methodist Church, where Tom served as choir director and Joyce sang in the choir. She was a standout with her captivating contralto voice. Joyce was known for her quick mind, sense of style, and abilities in the kitchen, which was a continuing source of delight to family, friends and especially Tom, who considered himself the luckiest man in the world. Tom and Joyce's love affair lasted their entire lives, and was an inspiration to all who knew them, especially their grandchildren. Joyce was preceded in death by Tom, her husband of 58 years, her parents, William John and Mabel Edwards and three sisters, Geneva House, Joan Goodson and Willette Ward Hester. Joyce is survived by her three children, Dave Sturgess and wife Pam, Steve Sturgess and wife Terri Teal, and Laura Fiaoni and husband David. She was adored and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Jamie Dunahoo and husband Rob, Chris Sturgess, Kayla Sturgess, Robert Fiaoni, Thomas Fiaoni and wife Morgan, Jessica Das and husband Riddhiman, Emily Schrimpf and husband Zach, and Becca Sturgess. Her legacy extended to great-grandchildren Jett Dunahoo, Rylee Dunahoo, and one on the way, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made in Joyce's name to the Salvation Army. Wade Family Funeral Home 817-274-9233
