In Loving Memory of Joy June Sessums Mitchell

Joy June was born June 15, 1929 near Eldorado, Oklahoma to Cecil and Georgia Sessums. They had had two daughters Doris Naomi Sessums (Brooks) and Joy June.

Her parents were farmers and ranchers and the family moved to town when Joy June began high school in Eldorado where she was a good student and basketball player. After graduating from High School she attended business school to prepare for a career, instead she fell in love and married Billy Joe Mitchell of Eldorado. Their firstborn son, Mark, was born in 1951 and in 1955 the family moved to Arlington Texas. Brett was the middle son and Phil was the youngest, all the boys were 6 years apart. Both Brett and Phil graduated from Southwestern Medical School as Medical Physicians.

Billy died in 1966 from apparent heart failure. Brett and Phil were both killed in tragic accidents, Phil in 1992 and Brett in 1999. Joy June became too familiar with tragedy, but being a product of the Dustbowl and the Great Depression along with her faith she went on to lead a very fulfilling life filled with many interests and wonderful friends. She was a charter member of Meadow Lane Baptist Church and was faithful and active there. She liked to sew, cross stitch and paint. She was a collector of many things including Coca Cola and Elvis memorabilia. She also loved her faith, sunflowers, her dogs and was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan always cheering them on. She also like to travel, including trips to Alaska with her sister, Hawaii with a nephew and the Grand Canyon with friends. She loved her family and friends greatly. All her friends enjoyed receiving the many birthday, words of encouragement and get well cards from her.

Joy June is survived by son, Mark and wife Judy, four grandchildren: Matt and wife Mel, Monica, Chris and wife Jesse, Sarah (McDougall) and husband Jason; along with seven great grandchildren, Ren Mitchell, Hailey McDougall, Shyla Mitchell, Kaity Mitchell, Brooke McDougall, Carson Mitchell and Travis McDougall. Joy June also leaves behind 6 nieces and 3 nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital to whom she donated often.
