ARLINGTON -- Johnny Calvin Reed, Ph.D., Ed., 78, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, in Arlington.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington, with Kevin Holt officiating.
Memorials: Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of choice.
John was born June 24, 1935, in Mansfield, Ark., to Johnnie Reed and Jamie Odel Griffith Reed. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and served as a petty officer second class. Johnny was a photographer's mate and enjoyed a lifelong hobby of photography.
An Arlington resident for the past 33 years, he was a member of Arlington Unitarian Universalist Church. John worked for numerous years as a professor of nursing education at the University of Texas at Arlington and was a licensed family counselor.
He loved to travel and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, drinking coffee and conversation. John gave of himself to so many; he was a Vitas Volunteer and Carter Blood Center platinum Blood donor for many years.
Survivors: Wife, Lea Reed; sons, Paul Sessel and Chris Reed and wife, Michelle; daughter, Heidi C. Beth and husband, R.B.; stepdaughters, Jeanine Camp, Laurel Andrews, Sonia Hannah, Valorie Reed and Kathleen Woods; brother, Joe Bob Reed; sisters, Frankie Almanza, Carolyn Andrews, Sandra McGowen and Jaunell Reed; and 15 grandchildren.
