Boomer Sooner
John was born May 13, 1946 to Floyd and Verna Long , and raised in Texhoma, Oklahoma. He was born again in 1966 while a student at Panhandle State College.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and a sister, Vana. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Dee, and their three children: daughter Anne and husband Cliff and grandchildren Andrew John and Alyssa Jean, son Nathaniel, and daughter Jennifer and husband Don and grandsons Dorian and Donovan. He also leaves behind his sister, Jeannie and her husband Stan and their three children and their families, as well as Vana's children and their families.
After graduating from Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri, John served the Lord in full time ministry for 22 years, before serving the Lord in the business community.
He was an avid Oklahoma Sooner fan, and overall sports enthusiast. He worked as an umpire for softball and baseball for over 25 years. He loved to play golf as often as he could.
He was a proud member of the Handley-Meadowbrook Lions Club for 13 years, serving in several roles including one year as President. He also served on the board for the Texas Lions Camp for disabled children.
John and Dee became members of Fielder Church when they moved to DFW in 2004, where he was a member of the choir and volunteered as a teacher.
He loved his family fiercely and unconditionally. Later in life, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He prayed daily that they would each become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. That was the legacy he most wanted to leave—and he has done just that. So they will see him again in eternity.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2:30pm at Fielder Church in Arlington, Texas.
