John was born on September 1, 1940, in Berwyn, Illinois, to John Joseph Sazama, Jr, and Sonia Gorecki Sazama. He grew up in Dallas and graduated from Jesuit High School. John received a music scholarship to SMU where he played trumpet in the Mustang Band. He worked as an air traffic controller, automotive finance and insurance manager, and realtor, for which he won many awards as top producer. He was also active in the US Coast Guard Reserves, working as a Radioman and bugler. John was a perfectionist and very hard-working. He wanted to be the best he could be at everything, so read prolifically and was happy to share his knowledge with others in need.
He was an avid photographer and loved practicing his hobby. He was also passionate about all genres of music, including Ray Conniff, Dixieland jazz, and Broadway musicals. John treasured his time with his children and grandchildren and was active with their many interests, including Boy Scout activities with his three boys.
John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Judy Janel Sazama; and son, Ken Sazama. Survivors include his wife, Edie Sazama; daughter, Kelly Sazama and husband, Mark McGinnis; sons, Brian Ostrander and wife Christel Roco, and Craig Ostrander; sister, Joan French; grandchildren, Luke Ostrander (Lieutenant and Air Force pilot), Ethan Ostrander, Madeleine Ostrander, Chris McGinnis, Katie McGinnis and Sarah McGinnis.
John was strong willed, had a big heart, and was willing to help those in need. In particular we remember his deep love and dedication to his family and friends. He will be dearly missed.
