John Henry Brinegar

John Henry Brinegar passed away on May 30,2023 at the age of 82. His ashes will be spread on the land he loved near his home in Gorman, Texas. He was from the can-do generation of men who handled business, did their duty, and never complained. He was an amateur carpenter, engineer, plumber, welder, electrician, and mechanic among other things. He spent more than 40 years at Birdsong Peanuts in Gorman, the last 20 as the supervisor of Plant 2. He loved to hunt and fish, to garden, and spend hours outside. He built the house in Gorman and lived there for several decades.

He was born on April 29,1941 in a modest dwelling in Bell County Texas, a few months before the United States entered WWII. His parents were Edgar Hoy Brinegar and Bertie May Modgling.

John Henry graduated from Gorman High School in 1960, one of the first in his family to do so. He often walked a number of miles to and from school. Football was his passion in high school and he achieved success as a two-way player. Running back on offense, middle linebacker on defense, and he handled kicking and punting duties. He made the All-Area team during several of his playing years (in the days before all-state for small schools).

He passed on a college football scholarship and instead stayed in town to marry his high school sweetheart. John and Edna Joyce Watson were married on July 10,1962. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2022.

He was proceeded in death by sisters Mary Stanley and Ellen Hice, brother Roddy Brinegar, and daughter-in-law Karen Brinegar.

He is survived by his brother Frank Brinegar and sister Judy Stewart, wife Edna Joyce, sons John Edwin Brinegar and Sam E. Brinegar, daughter-in-law Crystal Brinegar, granddaughter Brittany Brinegar, and grandsons Samuel Brinegar, Matthew Brinegar, and Joshua Brinegar.
