Joe Morris Atkinson

Rev. Joe Atkinson, 77, faithful husband, loving father and grandfather, friend of God and evangelist to the world, entered into the joy of his reward at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at an Arlington hospital, following a courageous two year battle with cancer and a brief hospitalization with complications. As an evangelist and gospel singer, Joe's ministry spanned more than 63 years in crusades and concerts throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. His albums and nationally televised specials have won multiple International Angel Awards. He was appointed the Official Good Will Ambassador for his hometown, Arlington, Texas by the mayor and city council. He was a founding member and former officer of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists. He has multiple hall of fame inductions to his name including the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He was a graduate of Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Thursday, November 5, at Grace Street Fellowship Church, 1516 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington with Dr. Morris Chapman, Dr. James Draper and Dr. Jim Burgin officiating. Joe was preceded in death by wife, Judith Atkinson in 2016; daughter, Jennifer Paige in 1995; parents, Joe and Elizabeth Atkinson of Pasadena, TX; brother, Patrick R. of Mountain Home, AR. Survivors: Loving wife, Tricia of Arlington; son, Jason Drew Atkinson of Coppell and wife, Diane; grandchildren, Victoria Lynn Barton of Prairie Grove, Arkansas and husband, Dustin, Calvin Mathis of Waco and wife, Hannah, Lola Grace and Landry Kate of Coppell; great-grandchildren, Theodore James and Joshua Charles; daughters, Shirley Worsham and husband, Ted of Hudson, OH, and Karen Arrington of Lawrenceville, GA and son, Randy Barnes and wife, Laurie of Lake City, FL; and brothers, Eddie and wife, Ann of Hernando, FL, and Reagan of Pasadena.
