James Louis "Jim" Quick

November 19, 1941 — May 11, 2023

James Louis “Jim” Quick, 81, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023 in Arlington.

Jim was born in Euclid, OH to Emerson D. Quick and Ruth Schultz Quick on November 19, 1941. Sister, Ruth Ann Quick was born 2 years later.

Jim’s family moved to Sacramento, CA where he graduated from high school in 1959 and graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA in 1964 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In college, he was active in the Mechanical Engineering Club as well as serving as Student Affairs Council representative his senior year.

He worked as an engineer in CT and CA before being transferred to General Dynamics FW in 1967. Soon after arriving in FW, he met Jo Ann Phillips who captured his heart. He and his “Yellow Rose of Texas” dated for several years with her becoming his “unofficial Chamber of Commerce emissary” introducing him to all of the joys of life in Texas! He also joined her at First Presbyterian Church Arlington, beginning his true spiritual journey. He was baptized, accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, by Rev. Warren Neal prior to their marriage on July 26, 1975. He quickly became active in the church serving 2 terms as Elder and 3 terms as Deacon over the years. He served on various FPCA committees/teams. He served as co-moderator of 1986-1988 Renovation and Construction Committee, was a member with Jo Ann of Family Living Sunday School class since 1988, including 6 years in teaching rotation. Jim and Jo Ann were also active members of Cornerstone prayer group for several years as well as FPCA Mariners, Porchlights, and Streetlights dinner groups.

Jim also served in leadership Circle for Arlington Evening Men’s Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) for 22 years, beginning in 1996 with frequent assignments as substitute group leader and as a group leader for 5 years.

After leaving General Dynamics, he worked in the heating, refrigeration and air conditioning area of the J.D. Higgins Co., Arlington for several years. He also ventured out into business for himself a couple of times before officially retiring in 2015. Late in life, he felt called to pursue more spiritual endeavors, especially after facilitating Spiritual Gifts Discovery Workshops for the FPCA Deacon Board and congregation plus leading a course, FPCA 201, Developing Spiritual Maturity with small groups of passionate church members.

Jim loved the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Cowboys, playing/watching/reading about golf, collecting Rangers memorabilia, vintage car models, photos of lighthouses, barns, and trains.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emerson and Ruth Quick; sister, Ruth Ann Begun (February 2023); and Kristi, our beloved dog (April 3, 2023).
