Jim New was born in Henrietta, Texas to John K. New and Rosa K. McJilton, one of 5 brothers and 6 sisters. He always liked to tease his twin that she was older than him. He graduated Holliday High School in Texas.

His accomplishments and adventures in his great life are many and varied but included being a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chandler, Texas; a Knights of Columbus member, and he served in Korea while in the Army. Jim graduated from TCU with an Accounting degree which he used while working at Hoerner Waldorf Corp./Champion International for 30 plus years. After his retirement from the box industry, he worked several other jobs until the age of 72.

Jim would tell you that his greatest accomplishment and pride was his family. He was very active and enjoyed attending as many of their ball games, dances, school functions and family birthdays and holidays that he could; picking out the very best card he could find to commemorate the event. Jim freely gave encouragement and never missed an opportunity to be his family’s biggest fan and was an excellent role model and elder wise counselor for all of us. Boating and fishing and water skiing was another of his pastimes and he shared that passion with everyone. He was also a fierce competitor in dominoes and never passed up an opportunity to play. Working on old trucks and even older tractors seemed to be a hobby, not just a necessity, as there was always one of those around.

After his retirement, Jim moved to 22 acres in Brownsboro, Texas and thrived walking the perimeter of the property every day for a time with his constant companion pet dogs and reading western novels. Every year he planted a garden and shared his tomatoes and crop with all. As his health declined, his family made sure he could remain there much of his time until his death, living and savoring life at a more leisurely pace, watching deer gather at the feeder from his front porch and checking on neighbors. He loved his extended family and even in his later years, he made trips to California, Nebraska and San Antonio to visit and make sure everyone knew how much they meant to him.

Jim was married and divorced from Elizabeth Josephine (Betty Jo) Himmels and had three children: Janis Wooden, Cynthia (Cindy) Caruthers and Gary and wife, Julie New. One newborn son preceded him in death. Later, he married and was divorced from Mary Ellen Dutcher and had one daughter, Christie New. His parents and all eleven siblings preceded Jim in death. Together with his four surviving children, his grandchildren survive him and are Andrea and husband Charlie Woodall, Valerie New and fiancé Bryan Edens, Patrick and wife Lisa New, Eric and wife Kelli Buchanan, Ryan and wife Shelby Wooden, Lee and wife Michelle Wooden, and Aaron and wife Donna Caruthers. He also had 11 great grandchildren that he doted on and loved deeply.

We will miss our Dad and treasure all of his memories and laugh about all of his many stories and share his rich and beautiful life always. Please know he treasured each and every one of his many friends. In lieu of flowers you may donate online to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by clicking here.
