James Edward Overman

James Edward Overman, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2024, in Mansfield, Texas. He was 91 years old.

Jim was born on April 12, 1933, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to Andrew Overman and Emma Lapman Overman. From a young age, he exhibited a passion for life and a sense of adventure that would shape his future. He was one of seven children, growing up with two sisters and four brothers.

Jim’s journey through life was marked by dedication and service. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 24 years as an Avionics Technician, working closely with air crews, eventually retiring in Tennessee as a Senior Chief. His naval career took him to various parts of the world, including Alaska, Guam, Newfoundland and onboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La in the Mediterranean, among other places.

It was during his time as a square dance caller that Jim met the love of his life, Betty. Together, they shared a passion for dancing that was evident in their every step. Jim and Betty recently celebrated their 70th anniversary together. Their love story was one of joy, laughter, and unwavering support.

Jim’s giving and caring nature was apparent in all aspects of his life. He was an amateur radio (Ham) operator, going by the call sign WØAHH. During the Vietnam war and stationed in Guam, Jim used his skills to assist servicemembers by “patching” phone calls stateside, helping them locate and connect with their families. While stationed in Alaska and Maryland, he worked with the Boy Scouts of America and became a member of The Order of the Arrow.

After retiring from the Navy, Jim and Betty built a home on 15-acres, where they raised cows and embraced a tranquil life. James was an active member of the Clopton First United Methodist Church, where he led the Youth Group, taught Sunday school and an especially popular series on Angels, and touched many lives with his wisdom and kindness.

Known for his stern discipline balanced by a great sense of humor, his warm heart and generous spirit made him a cherished friend and confidant to many.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Betty; their son, Jerry Overman and wife Monica; daughter, Cheryl Stutman and husband Galen; three grandchildren; one step-grandson; three great-grandchildren, and remaining siblings. His legacy of love, service, and joy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

A military committal service will be held June 6, 2024 at the DFW National Cemetery, celebrating Jim’s remarkable life and the indelible mark he left on the world.
