Helen Rae Hardin Moulton, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, in Arlington, surrounded by her family. she was born on July 11, 1938, in Texarkana, Texas, to William A. “Shug” Hardin and Helen Ward Hardin as their middle child. She graduated from Morrilton High School as her class salutatorian and then went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and a teaching certification from Rice University in 1960. While on campus she was elected by her peers to serve as the president of her literary society.
She met her husband of 62 years, Bill Moulton, while living in Houston and working for Delta Airlines. They married on October 14 at Central Presbyterian Church in Russellville, Arkansas.
They moved to Arlington in 1967 and raised their four children. In 1977, she joined Arlington ISD teaching for more than 20 years at both Swift Elementary and Young Junior High schools. She was a passionate caring teacher who loved teaching English, reading and history, while sharing her love of literature, history, and travel with thousands of students.
Her service to the community included serving as a president of the Arlington Woman’s Club (Night Group) in 1978, President of the Arlington Story League, and Vice President of the National Story League. She volunteered as a scout leader. She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington serving as both a Trustee and Elder. She taught Sunday School for many years sharing her love of Christ with the community and her love of Scripture.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James A. Hardin, and her sister Elizabeth Leigh Hardin. She is survived by her husband, Bill Moulton, and children Katie and Scot Sotzing, Jennifer and Michele Moulton-Hurst, Julie Zwahr, and Tres and Leslie Moulton. She is survived by six grandchildren, one great-grandson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation with the family will be from 6–8 p.m. on Friday, October 13 in the Parlor at First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, 1200 South Collins Street, Arlington, Texas 76010. Please enter through the Collins Street office entrance due to construction.
A service to honor Helen’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 14 in the Fellowship Hall at First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, Texas. Please enter through the Fellowship Hall door, in the south parking lot.
