ARLINGTON – Evelyn Ray Briggs Martin, 84, a loving and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 after a decline in health, surrounded by family.
Funeral: 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 20, at Woods Chapel Baptist Church, 2424 California Lane, Arlington. Interment: 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 20, at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas, Lane C. Visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at Wade Family Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Kidney Association and the American Diabetes Association.
Evelyn was born July 29, 1932 in San Angelo and moved to Kermit, Texas in 1936. She played clarinet in the Kermit Yellowjackets marching band. She graduated Kermit High School in 1950 and from North Texas State University in 1954 with a B.S. in Business Education. She married Jo E. Martin on August 13, 1955 at First Baptist Church in Kermit and moved to Midland where they had their first child, Debbi. They moved afterward to Hobbs, NM, where they had two sons, Lance and Bruce. She was a member of a couples Bridge Club with her husband, and they made many life-long friends.
They moved to Arlington, Texas in 1965. She was a stay-at-home Mom for many years and volunteered in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and as a parent volunteer at her children's school. She was a member of University Baptist Church since 1966, and is currently a member of Woods Chapel Baptist Church.
Later, she worked at The University of Texas at Arlington in the Engineering Department and at the Physical Plant where she retired in 1997. She was honored as Employee of the Year in 1992.
She cheered for her children and grandchildren at sporting events, piano recitals, etc. What a strong Christian influence she had on her family and friends! She loved to travel and made great memories doing so.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Jo Martin; father, John Briggs; mother, Florence Briggs; and brother, Frank Briggs.
Survivors: Daughter, Debbi Chumchal and husband, David; sons, Lance Martin and Bruce Martin and wife, Paige; grandchildren, Brooks Burris and wife, Loren, Tanner McClain and husband, Max, Taylor Schrader and husband, Chris, Shane Martin, Matt Chumchal and wife, Emily, Aaron Chumchal and wife, Amanda, Mark Chumchal and wife, Terrie; great-grandchildren, Porter, Max, Jax, Addi, Hailey, Sadie, Ella, Lily, Caleb, Landon, Noah, and Ben; many loving brothers and sisters-in-law; and nieces, nephews and friends.
