ARLINGTON -- Douglas A. Wood, 61, passed away Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, in Arlington surrounded by love from his family after a long battle with cancer.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Thursday at Lamar Baptist Church, 1000 W. Lamar Blvd., Arlington.
Memorials: A memorial fund will be established for his grandson, Matthew Gabriel Gonzales, at Wells Fargo.
Doug was born Oct. 10, 1953, in Whidbey Island, Wash., to Quinn J. and June D. Wood. Doug was raised in Arlington, where he graduated from Arlington High School. He attended Texas A&M on a football scholarship and graduated from UT-Arlington with a bachelor's degree and a master's in education from North Texas State University. He retired as the athletic director/head football coach at Robstown High School in Robstown in December 2010.
Doug loved all 34 years he dedicated to coaching and in the classroom teaching geometry. He enjoyed having family cookouts, sports and being with his family. Doug was not only admired and respected by his fellow coaches, but more so by the students he taught in the classroom and all the athletes he coached in football, track and baseball. Doug always took time to listen to every student and athlete.
He was preceded in death by his father, Quinn J. Wood; brother, Steve "Red Dog" Wood; mother-in-law, Patsy J. Richey; sister-in-law, Rhonda C. Threlkeld; and nephew, Mark Alan Threlkeld Jr.
Survivors: Wife of 40 years, Tamara Richey Wood; son, Brandon K. Wood; daughter, Nicole Cartner and husband, Shane; precious grandson, Matthew Gabriel Gonzales, aka "Scooter" or "Littlest Buck"; mother, June D. Wood; brother, Gary G. Wood and wife, Shelley; sister, Jody Pickering and husband, Clay; nephews and nieces, Caleb Wood, Katie, Eric and Logan Wurst, Carrie, Samy, Kylee and Wyatt Ben Said, Garrett, Krissy, Madison, Gavin and Parker Wood, Andrew, Kristina, Tristan and Jacob Threlkeld, and Luke, CJ, Lainey and Sydney Lofland; and Buddy, his and Tamara's white English bulldog.
