Conner Ross Scott (born April 1931 in Brownwood, Texas) passed away peacefully at home in Arlington, Texas on July 13, 2021. He brought joy and, most of all, laughter to everyone in his vast orbit. Always the life of the party, he never once in his 90 years met a stranger—whether as a boy in Brownwood, as a rabble-rouser challenging the “no dancing” rules at Baylor, as a Sears credit manager or Discover Card salesman, on the greens or especially the 19th hole at Shady Valley Country Club, or with whichever unsuspecting soul sat next to him at any of his seven grandchildren's sporting events or art shows.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and would wryly mention his perfection in keeping any and all enemies out of Lubbock. No one had a more positive outlook on life, which helped him both shrug off flubbed chips or double faults—once shooting his age of 73—and keep diabetes at bay for 30 years. He loved watching all sports at levels from T-ball through the Rangers, and he celebrated a basketball championship for his beloved Baylor Bears this spring. He worked to live and prioritized family, but he had an intellectual interest in business and the stock market and especially technology. He was a very early adopter of computers and the internet in the mid-90s, but continued entering stock prices from the paper Wall Street Journal into a spreadsheet well into the new millennium.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary; children C. David Scott, Jill Matyastik (Bill), Cindy Obermeyer (Paul), and Amy Harlow (John Brill); grandchildren Amber McCullagh (CW), Allie Obermeyer (John Mrkonic), Bryce Harlow (Becca), Andie Obermeyer (Jay Rieger), Brooke Harlow, Rachel Matyastik, and Reid Matyastik; great-grandchildren Kate McCullagh, Caroline McCullagh, Elizabeth McCullagh, Annika Mrkonic, and Blake Harlow—albeit not even half as many great-grandchildren as he would've liked.
Donations in his memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements for a celebration of his life are pending.
