Charles Wayne Jeffreys

February 18, 1945 — December 31, 2023

Charles Wayne Jeffreys of Arlington, Texas, beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather passed away December 31, 2023. Charles, “Mr. J” to more than three decades of scouts and their families, leaves a far-reaching legacy behind of supporting young men and women discover their gifts and leadership abilities after serving as Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 380 for 33 years.

Charles was born February 18, 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas to Charles Thomas Jeffreys and Bessie Vivian Chance. Charles enjoyed school growing up and enjoyed helping on his uncle’s farm on weekends, where he learned to drive a tractor before a car. He began working at age fourteen delivering papers for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. Through hard work and dedication his responsibilities increased, and he saved up to attend TCU following graduation from Paschal High School in 1963. Charles graduated from TCU with a Bachelors in Marketing in 1967.

Charles’ familiarity with the newspaper industry and interest in Advertising lead him to work for the All-Church Press and the Fort Worth Star Telegram in Ad Sales. He began work with Dally Advertising in 1970. Charles served as Vice President of Dally Advertising until 1997 and then Media Director of Dally until 2004. He worked during retirement years as a Hospitality Professional with Group Tours and Corporate Meetings.

During college at TCU, he asked Penny Howell, whom he went to church with, to go to a TCU game with him because, “He had an extra ticket and didn’t want it to go to waste”. It turned out to be a good decision because he found the love of his life. After dating for three years, they were married in June of 1968. Through 55 years of marriage they supported one another as church leaders, scout leaders, and loving parents. Charles loved to travel with Penny and loved taking road trips whenever downtime presented itself. Their only child, William (Bill) Jeffreys was born in 1978 and Charles loved taking the family down to Galveston to explore the beach, like he grew up doing with his parents.

Bill’s second year in scouts the troop found itself without a scoutmaster and adequate adult coverage to go to summer camp. Charles said he could fill the role temporarily. Mr. J served as Scoutmaster until his passing, having helped hundreds of young people and their families. He helped advise over 100 young people who achieved their Eagle Scout during his tenure of over three decades at the troop. He believed scouting helped build character, leadership, and memories to last a lifetime.

Charles was an active Elder and Congregational Leader at First Christian Church of Fort Worth in his younger years and at Northwest Christian Church of Arlington, where he and Penny have been active members for the past 46 years. He was an active member of Rotary for many years in Arlington. His desire to serve and be active in his community was driven by his faith.

Mr. Jeffreys is survived by wife, Penny Jeffreys; Son, Bill Jeffreys and his wife Serena; Grandchildren, Daniel and Jeffrey Iden, Andrew and Hailey Jeffreys; Sister-in-law Susan Christian and her husband James, all of Arlington.
