Charles Minton Groschup

August 11, 1939 — September 26, 2023

Charles Minton Groschup passed away at home on September 26, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Karl and Elizabeth Groschup in 1939. He graduated from Diamond Hill High School in 1957 and subsequently attended Arlington State College which later became the University of Texas at Arlington. At a very young age, he became a business owner and founded Charley’s, a grocery store on Center Street in Arlington. He married Patricia shortly after starting this business. To this day, 50 years later, people who met him talked about their childhoods and buying candy at Charley’s. After he sold Charley’s he pursued other career interests, and ultimately retired from Jorco Group, but none held a place in his heart like Charley’s.

Charles placed great importance on community involvement and service. He was a member of Lion’s Club of Arlington and the youngest founding member of the Arlington United Independent Grocers Association. Charles was a kind and generous man who would give a stranger the shirt off his back.

He was a fan of Longhorn football, Willie Nelson, and Elvis. He and Pat attended several Elvis concerts with friends over the years. During his retirement Charles focused his attention on his BBQ smoker and his outsized garden. Nothing made him happier than to give his friends a home-smoked turkey and fresh vegetables from his garden.

Charles is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pat, their two children Stephanie and Stephen and wife, Carmen, and his sister Evelyn and her husband Carlton Martin as well as their children Olivia, Derek and Keith. Our family would like to give a special thank you to the hospice nurses at BestCare Hospice, who guided us through this difficult time with advice, grace, and never-ending positivity.

Services will be held via Wade Funeral Home at Grace Covenant Church located at 3402 W. Interstate 20, Arlington, TX 76017 on November 2, 2023 at 1:00 pm.
