Cecille Brooks Roney

December 26, 1936 — November 1, 2020

Cecille Elgin Brooks Roney was born December 26, 1936, in Fort Worth, Texas to the parentage of Mr. Ceylon Elgin and Ms. Freddie Fuller (who both preceded her in death). She was the eldest of five siblings. She was a widow to Joe Brooks Jr. and to this union were born two AMAZING daughters: Jocelyn McCorkle and LaWanda Brigham. Later in life, she married Henry Roney on December 28, 1996. She acknowledged her faith at an early age and was baptized in the Church of Christ in Fort Worth. She attended I.M. Terrell High School and graduated in 1954. At an early age, Cecille was selected to perform in two musicals at Casa Manana in 1961, “Showboat”, and in 1964, “Finian's Rainbow.” This stellar-soprano and lyric vocalist received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas in 1966, and began teaching elementary music in Fort Worth Independent School District. In 1970, she earned her Elementary Teacher's Certificate at Texas Christian University. Cecille's musical talent continued for five years as a member of Schola Cantorum of Texas from 1970-1975. After 15 years in the classroom, she began work in October 1979 as Dunbar Area Community School Administrator and worked in the capacity until August 2000 when she went into retirement. A true believer in scholastic achievements, Cecille earned her Master's of Education degree from Texas Women's University in 1982. Once more she was selected for another performance at Casa Manana in 1984. She was a member of the ensemble in “Showboat.” Cecille Roney doesn't limit her talents to the theater. As previously stated, she served faithfully as the Music Director of Singing at Stop Six Church of Christ and her present church, Eastland Church of Christ; she loved teaching music and singing. Cecille Roney was also an outstanding Sunday School Teacher. Because of her love and concern for the community, she was appointed as a member of the Historical and Cultural Landmarks Commission. She was a member of National Victims of Crime; Fort Worth Arts Council; Chairlady of Auxiliary Schola Cantorum Concerts; Life-Member of the National Education Association; and Fort Worth Retired Teachers Association. Another deserving honor came on September 11, 2011 at Pantego Lions Club where she was selected as a honoree of the "First National Appreciation Foundation Choral Directors Founding Musical." In her retirement, Cecille Roney loved to eat good food and watch soap operas. The emeritus Elgin's legacy continues to this very day. With her warm spirit and generous heart, she left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She loved and served unconditionally, leaving a legacy that will pass from generation to generation. Cecille was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ceylon Elgin and Freddie Fuller; and one brother, Ceylon Elgin Jr. Cecille peacefully entered eternal rest on November 1, 2020, leaving to cherish her memory: two daughters, Jocelyn McCorkle (Michael) and LaWanda Brigham; four grandchildren, Eboni Goff, Jheron Thompson, Quinton Brigham and Lynzie Brigham; two great-grandchildren, Haleigh and Jace Goff; step-mother, Aola Elgin; one sister, Carolyn Green; two brothers, Leonard Elgin (Wanda) and Arthur Elgin (Carolyn); and her husband, Henry Roney and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
