Carl William Knox

Carl William Knox Jr, a resident of Arlington from a time when there were only two paved roads, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 9th, 2019, at the age of 96. He was a graduate of Arlington High School as well as TCU, where he excelled in athletics. He was a recipient of the Dan D. Rogers Most Valuable Player Award at TCU (Texas Christian University) in 1947, and was honored by being inducted into both the TCU Football and UTA Athletic Halls of Fame. He still holds the Southwest Conference record for the longest punt of 94 yards. His athletic abilities opened many doors throughout his young life. In addition to playing several sports for his schools, he also had the unique opportunities to play golf with Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, play football against Tom Landry, and referee a boxing match with Heavyweight Champion Joe Lewis. He was also given the task of teaching basketball to Japanese POW's during WWll. Although he coached for 6 years at both Goldthwaite High School and TCU, he spent his career selling life insurance in Arlington, Texas and surrounding areas. Carl was known as an honest, straight shooting, tea totalling character who loved telling funny stories to his friends and family. He loved bass fishing and taking his family camping where they enjoyed many happy times around the campfire and on the water. He taught his children the importance of being honest, doing the right thing even when it hurts, and to always walk in the other fellow's shoes. He loved being involved in the Arlington community where he co-founded what are now the Arlington Boys and Girls Club, as well as the Arlington Bass Club. He also founded the Southwest Chapter of Life Underwriters, where they named their highest award given to members, the “Carl Knox Founders Award for Excellence”. In 1999, the city of Arlington created Carl Knox Park to honor his public service. He loved and cared about his God, his family, his country, his fishing buddies, and his clients. He was a man who made this world a better place, not because of his athletic prowess, but because of his moral character, love of clean humor and his investment in others. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who loved him. Carl is survived by his wife of over 66 years, Carolyn King Knox; son, Carl W. Knox lll and wife Sheri; daughter, Kathy Moore and husband Gary; granddaughters, Mandi Perkins and husband Chris, Amy Anderson, Calissa Knox, Alissa Anderson, and Kenna Knox, as well as one great granddaughter, Morgan Perkins. Carl was preceded in death by his father Carl Knox Sr.; mother, Anna Clair Knox Scott; infant son, John Knox; infant daughter, Nancy Knox; and sisters, Jane Rauschelbach and Ruth Ricks. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 16th, at Fielder Church – South Oaks, 5925 US -287, Arlington, TX. 76017.
