Bettye Bain Lowe was an example of God’s unconditional love for family, friends, and anyone in need. Her home was always open to those who needed a home, a mother, and a family. She made our home a place of complete love and acceptance. Despite having very little, she provided a safe and loving environment for all who entered. Reflecting on our childhood though money was little we were the wealthiest people I know.
Bettye grew up in a time of great hardship caused by the depression of 1929. My grandfather worked odd jobs for food, and they were homeless much of the time. She told of an amazing childhood of living in parks and sleeping on picnic tables. With deep respect and love for her mother, Bettye shared stories of how her mother did everything she could to create a home at the park, even sweeping the dirt and keeping the picnic table like a dining table. She laughed and joked with great fondness about being the original homeless people. Her childhood memories were very fond.
Graham was serving in the Air Force at Perrin Air Force Base near Denison Texas when he met and married Bettye. It was love at first sight. Until death did them part Graham always claimed he was married to the prettiest women in the room and Bettye said Graham was the strongest and most handsome man she ever met. Graham also lived through very hard times. His Mother died when he was only 8 years old. His Father, who was a farmer, was unable to care for such young children, with the youngest being only two, they were sent to live at the American Baptist Childrens Home in Troy Alabama where all the children remained until they were adults. His memories of the home were very fond. My Dad joined the Air Force at 17 years old and served honorably for 21 years. He adored his grandchildren and loved fishing with his grandsons.
Bettye and Graham made God and family so important in our lives. We were raised to respect all adults, a man’s word is his bond, a handshake is as good as a contract, never bring shame to our family name and to always be thankful for there is always someone else worse off.
