Betty was born 1931 in Belmont, Mississippi, in the northeastern part of the state. Tragedy struck early in her life as a rogue sheriff shot her father in a local cafe. Her mother Rose Lee moved in with Betty’s grandfather and grandmother until her mother remarried Burt Carr. Betty gained new brothers and sisters and they lived and moved around Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana to survive the great depression and then work in the war effort. Though small in stature, Betty grew into being a strong woman.
Betty was in Galveston when Hurricane Carla ravaged the Texas Gulf Coast. Soon thereafter, Betty moved to Arlington where she married Phil Carey. Together, they made their home in Arlington.
Betty worked as a receptionist for what would later become Container Corporation. Her position as the receptionist gave Betty a great stage. Betty never met a stranger. Whether In an elevator or store, or anywhere she could meet someone new, Betty always had a joke, a quip or humorous comment. She had a quick wit, spoke her mind and was genuinely entertaining. She would put any stranger at ease and make a friend.
Betty was an avid lover of cats and adopted many strays through the years.
In the late 1980s Betty married Rev. John B White of Fort Worth TX. Together they loved to travel, go out dancing and join in many Shriners golf outings. They were active members of First Christian Church in Arlington. John B White preceded Betty in death in 2020.
Betty will be missed.
