Barbara was born to the late Claud L. and Janie Elizabeth Boatman Lawson on Nov 20, 1938 in Marshall, Texas. Barbara graduated from Arlington High School. She married the late Fred Carlton Hughes on June 14, 1958, and they spent forty-nine years in a delightful marriage in Arlington and had two children, the late Scott Carlton Hughes, and their son of Austin, Texas, William Kent Hughes.
Barbara worked for the City of Arlington water department for many years, and later worked at Gene Allen's Gifts in retirement. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining her friends and family, finding the world's best recipes, gardening and fishing at her lakehouse near her East Texas roots in Carthage, Texas. Barbara was creative in everything she did: she loved painting, quilting, and numerous arts and crafts. She loved to joke and play games, and instigated fun nights whenever family gathered. She supported community activities and was a leader in Cub Scouts, PTA, and shared her love for Jesus Christ with children in Sunday school at First Baptist Church for many years. She loved Arlington High School Class of ‘57 and regularly joined them for lunch outings. Barbara truly loved people, and her greatest personal reward was supporting and caring for her friends and family.
Survivors: Son, Kent Hughes of Austin and his children, Trevor Hughes of Tyler, Texas, and Darby Hughes of Austin, Texas; brother, Norvel William Lawson and his wife, JoAnn; sister-in-law, Ruth Lawson; and numerous cousins, nephews and life-long friends - they all made her smile, laugh and brought her so much sincere joy.
